Lalon

Baul songs have been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Perhaps, Lalon songs have played as a consideration for this incredible recognition. Cheuriya village of Kusthia district has become a place for pilgrimage for many Bauls because of the shrine of the Baul saint Lalon Shah (1772-1890), even though there is a dispute over his birth date and place. This is where the Baul King founded his spiritual institute known as Lalon Akhrah. Lalon Shah along with his spiritual devotees and followers was buried at the middle of the Akhra. Every year thousands of his followers, devotees and tourists throng the place from across the world. The place literally turns into a sea of people who come to attend Lalon remembrance festival arranged on Dol Purnima(full moon) and on the first day of Bangla month,Karthik on his death anniversary. Here the visitors may unknowingly plunge into the world of spiritual thoughts as they happen to meet divinely inspired Bauls or pass by mystic minstrels singing Baul songs.
