Fokir Lalon Shah

There is a controversy over the birth of Baul emperor Lalon Shah. No specific information is available about his race or religion. There is a saying that he was born in a Hindu Kayastha family. At one point of time he went to Ganga bath with a Baul team. When he was affected smallpox on the way, his companions abandoned him on the bank of the river. A Muslim Baul named Siraj Shah picked him up and healed him. He became a disciple of Siraj Shah and devoted himself to mysticism. When Siraj Shah died, he developed his talent by setting up an Akhra Bari at Cheuria in Kushtia. In his endeavors, he acquired special knowledge of Hindu-Muslim scriptures and excelled in Baul music. His songs are rich in spiritual, mystical and artistic qualities. He has composed more than a thousand songs. Rabindranath Tagore was the first to collect 298 songs of Lalon and publish 20 songs in the then "Prabashi" magazine. His songs including ‘Unknown bird in the cage’, ‘Arshinagar next to my house, ‘When will reunite’, ‘Who exists in my house’,  are invaluable pieces of Bengali literature. He died on 1 Kartik at Chheuria in 1297 BS.

Mohini Mohon

Mohini Mohan was born in Elangi village of Kumarkhali. He was the founder of Mohini Mills, the oldest textile mill in East Bengal in 1906.

Kangal Harinath Majumdar

Kangal Harinath was born in Kundupara village of Kumarkhali. He is known as a social revolutionary-periodical correspondent. Grambarta Prakashika (183-65), directed by him, caused a great stir at that time. Among his published books are Brahmand Dev, Fikir Chander Gitabali, Vijay Basanta are notable. Mir Mosharraf Hossain's book Bishad Sindhu was published in his established MN (in the name of Mathuranath). Press Grambarta was also published from here. The ruins of the press still attract tourists.

Radhabinod Pal

He was born in 1896 in the village of Selimpur in Daulatpur upazila. He was the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. He was also the Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University. He served as Chief Justice of the International Military Court during World War II. When judges from other countries identified Japan as a war criminal, he gained international fame by proving Japan innocent of war crimes. A museum and street in Kyoto, Japan have been named after him.

Parry Sundary

She was a woman zamindar of Sadarpur in present day Mirpur upazila. She was the leader of the indigo rebellion in the Kushtia region. The indigo revolt that took place in Bangladesh in 1860 actually started in Kushtia. This revolt escalated to an extreme height centering on the the fight between T.I. Kenny, the notorious Indigo tax collector of Kushtia salghar madhuya and Parisundari and a female zamindar of Amla Sadarpur, pari shundari of kushtia. Peasants led by Parisundari camped at Shalghar Madhuya, farmer defeated the group of J.G. Morris. She attacked Shalghar Madhua's indigo factory several times.

Mir Mosharraf Hossain

He was born in 1848 in Lahini Para of Kumarkhali. His father was Mir Moazzem Hossain, a zamindar, and his mother was Daulatan Nesa. He was the first Bengali Muslim to publish a magazine called Azizunnehar (1874-76). His other notable magazine was ‘Hitkari’. He wrote a number of books and notable among them are Bishad Sindhu, Zamindar Darpan, Udasin Pathik Moner Kotha, Gazi Mia Bastani, Ratnavati, Basanta Kumari, Gojivan, Amar Jivani, Sangeet Lahari etc. Arches, plaques, schools and libraries have been erected in his memory at his homestead.

Bagha Jatin

Yatindranath Mukherjee (Bagha Jatin) (December 7, 1879 - September 10, 1915) was a Bengali anti-British revolutionary leader. Bagha Jatin was born in Kaya village of Kushtia district. His father's name was Umeshchandra Mukherjee and his mother's name was Saratshashi. Jatin was famous for his physical strength since childhood. He was able to kill a tiger alone with only a knife, so his name was changed to Bagha Jatin.

      

Besides, Shah Azizur Rahman, engineer Kamrul Islam Siddiqui, singer Abdul Jabbar, Farida Parveen, poet Azizur Rahman, Akbar Hossain, Roknuzzaman alias Dada Bhai, Mahmuda Khanam Siddique, Manmanath Mukherjee and many other unnamed talented people were born in this district.
