Kushtia Municipality was formed in 1869. Kushtia's famous indigo trader T.I. Kenny built a huge building in this city for the sake of indigo business. Built on 210 acres, this building had 50 rooms and was known as the Crescent Building. It is here that the newly formed Kushtia sub-divisional office, court and municipal office were established. But currently the building is dilapidated. Later in 1966, the present municipal building was shifted to the house of Satish Shah, a wealthy zamindar of this city.
