Main Rivers

The Padma : It is a major river in Bangladesh. It is the main tributary of the Ganges in the Himalayas and the second longest river in Bangladesh. Rajshahi, an important city in Bangladesh, is located on the north bank of the Padma. The Padma has a maximum depth of 1,571 feet (479 m) and an average depth of 968 feet (295 m). In Bangladesh, the length of the river is 121 km, the average width is 10 km and the nature of the river is serpentine. The Padma flows through Kushtia district and is the source of various tributaries of Kushtia (such as Gorai, Kumar, Mathabhanga, Hisna). Another name of the Padma is Kirtinasha as King Rajballav's achievements were destroyed in the face of the erosion of the Padma.

The Gorai : The river Gorai is known as a major tributary of the Ganges or the Padma. It is an important river for the south-western part of Bangladesh. The Gorai River originates from the Padma River flowing in Hatashaharipur Union of Kushtia District and flows up to Nakol Union in Sreepur Upazila of Magura District and falls into the Madhumati River. At one time the main stream of the Ganges flowed through the river Gorai, although Hughli-Bhagirathi was the original stream of the Ganges. The Gorai River originates from the Padma at a place called Talbaria, 19 km downstream of the Hardinge Bridge in the north of Kushtia district. The river flows through Kushtia district and enters Jhenaidah district at a place called Ganeshpur.

Mathabhanga River : Mathabhanga River is a transboundary river of Bangladesh and India. The river flows through Kushtia, Meherpur and Chuadanga districts of Bangladesh. The river is 121 km long, 29 m wide and 10 m deep near Darshan. The area of ​​river basin is 500 sq km. Usually the banks of this river do not overflow and flood the surrounding areas. The river is free from tidal effects.
Kumar River: Kumar river is one of the rivers located in Chuadanga District, Kushtia District, Jhenaidah District and Magura District in southwestern Bangladesh. The length of the river is 124 km and the average width is 75 m.
Kaliganga River : Kaliganga is a river flowing over the Kushtia-Jhenaidah district of Bangladesh. The Kaliganga River enters the Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila by taking water from the Gorai River in Kushtia District and flowing straight south.
Hisna River : Hisna is a tributary of the Padma. Hisna has started its journey from Padma to the west and flowed from Bheramara of Kushtia towards Bahadurpur Union.
